I'm posting this because I have noticed an influx of people who absolutely refuse to accept any sort of criticism what-so-ever, usually chalking it up to an excuse that the people hate them and "Haters gonna hate" (dear FSM that hurt to type)
I want to clear up any misunderstanding people may have that critics = hate. That is not the case, in fact, that equation is false.
You see, when someone hates you, they usually hate you for a reason. Be it jealousy, personality clashes, the perception of right and wrong, one has been spoiled, you look different, act different, or you are not what they perceive to be "normal", then that's all they can throw at you. Nothing but hate and venom will come from them and whilst it may hurt to hear it at times, you can normally shrug it off and carry on your daily plan.
Critics though, they're completely different. They do care for you and point out your flaws in order for you to improve of them. However, these days all the new 'critics' seem to think that they should just keep pointing flaw after flaw and not praise someone/something where credit is due (yes film critics, I'm looking at you. Roger Ebert was a fair and wonderful critic, probably the only one to be 100% genuine too)
For instance, I know that I don't follow it, but look at sports. Usually the criticism about one player more than the other drives them to become better and better, a critic will write "This players game was one of the best this season, however his defence was a little lacking which gave way to some mistakes being made" The player in particular will read that and think back to his games, realise he needs to up his defence and will do for the next season. Same critic writing about the player will then say something like "The players defence has really improved over the last season, he has really grown as a person and as a team-mate. However his stamina through-out the season has become sub-par, resulting in him being substituted out more matches than he cares to admit." The player will then focus on improving his fitness level, becoming exponentially better than he was a mere 2 seasons ago.
If that player had just read all the negative points, then he would have just plain quit after the first season. But the fact that the critic had praised him when he improved his performance after the flaws were pointed out to him that shows the player that the critic really does care about the person.
When it comes to anybody, and I do mean anybody trying something. Be it University, fitness, sports, music, photography, drawing, improving their own social life, heck even dieting, then I urge you. No, in fact I beg you.
LISTEN TO YOUR CRITICS
They are the the ones that love you. Yeah family and friends will encourage you, but that's part of their job. Critics usually remain impartial and offer help/advice without you even asking for it.
They are not there to throw hate at you, or pick on you, or subject you to relentless psychological bullying. They are there to help you realise your flaws in what you are doing. By doing that they expect you to, at the very least, attempt to improve. If you show them that you are improving, their respect for you will increase too. It is when you are screwing up so badly and no-one, not even your critcs, are saying anything.... That's a very bad place to be as it means that everyone has just given up on you.
Except the haters as they will relentlessly push you down even further.

Motivation, Madness and Metal
Well, I've been meaning to write a blogpost along these lines for quite some time now... So here goes.
One thing I have seen a lot of on MFP is people asking for motivational music, yet when I read the post they're all asking for something with a beat to work out to. To me, that's not really motivation, I mean it is... but not what I perceive to be motivational.
True motivation tells you to get out of bed and Carpe the fuck out of the Diem, it tells you that you *CAN* better yourself, you *WILL* better yourself and it will *HELP* better yourself too. All of this, I find coming from Power Metal.
Sure it's fast and powerful (clue's in the name there) and not to everyones taste, but even if you just read the lyrics, it can get you in the mindset of wanting to accomplish so, so much. In fact, here are some sample lyrics
So if you're looking for motivation, looking for powerful songs to get right into your soul and move you... emotionally and physically, then Power Metal is where it's at.... or at least it is for me.

There is no limit to what can be done, Climbing the mountain with power so strong. Dusty roads - down the way, Leaving the future behind me"
- Stratovarius - Find Your Own Voice: "Find your own voice, Unleash the power within. Go find your own truth and let others be. Let your own light guide your way through life. Find your own way, Make your own paradise"
- Sonata Arctica - Victoria's Secret "Dancing on the path and singing now you got away. You can reach the goals that you have set from now on , every day. There is no way you would go back now, oh no, those days are past. Life is waiting for the one who loves to live, and it is not a secret"

Where to begin??
Where to begin....
I used to be quite the handsome chappy. Average build with some muscle definition, good teeth, great hair & the bluest eyes on a 17 year old. Then shit got real & I just got depressed. Nothing too bad like threatening my own life or anything like that, but motivation left me..... I wasn't in a happy job or relationship, so I just gave in.
And you know what, I was comfortable with that.
I was comfortable being lazy, slobbish, over-weight and unfit. Because I was open & myself.
Now, I'm on a long journey, which started off as a small cliff face, levelling out to a gentle slope before *BAM!!!!* Brick wall. Now, I'm the kind of guy who can stare at a brick wall for hours trying to figure out how to get over it or look for a gate through it. But this one stretches beyond the horizons to my left and right. I can see the sun before midday, but after that it's eclipsed by the wall.
I had reached my point of no progress.
Until now....
I have a small crowd of supporters that help me out. They yell encouragement when I climb & offer condolences when I fall What I really need is a belay team, to help me continue even when I fall.
And I know that'll happen soon
I've got goals that need to be met. Who wants to help me?

Well.... That escalated quickly
Greetings, you lovely minions.
So, as most of you are aware (and if you're not, just scroll back through time... it's amazing) I've been feeling a tad down in the dumps lately.
Although if you were to look at me, you wouldn't see it.
Anyways, back onto the right subject now :-) The impossible has happened... I have a girlfriend. Now, I know what you're thinking and it's along the lines of "Big-whoop ¬_¬" But for me, this is a huge deal as I had pretty much resigned myself to singledom for the foreseeable future, and then literally out of no-where we got talking.
As far as first dates go, it started off a disaster, with both of us arriving late (although one of us later than the other) the "date-plan" getting chucked out of the window, except for one tiny part, which was to view Birmingham from the Hyatt Hotel... We didn't have a room, we just wandered in and looked out the main windows. But a little food, a little alcohol, and a little metal music and we were both relaxed, smiling and having fun.
Then things went on from there.
Now, I'm not normally one to enjoy receiving a lot of presents for my birthday, or for valentines (Birthday on the 13th, Valentines on the 14th... just too much) but any girlfriend who can get jokey presents such as an inflatable zimmer-frame, a kitchen apron with blow-up-bewbs, a back scratcher (or 'any-body-part-scratcher' for that matter) and a little 'Dick'-y bow tie (guess where it goes... That's right, and for that, you get 5 internet points. Spend 'em wisely) and still find time to come over, let me cook & just relax. That's the sign that things will be good.
And things have not only been good, they've been great.
My dad's hip is getting a lot better, over Christmas I was seeing him going from crutches to sticks, to stick. Going for walks along the shore & just becoming more active & independant. My sisters cancer was removed with no complications, She may have a fairly large scar along her jawline and a hole where the tumour was, but a small price to pay for what could have been something serious. (besides, she's my sister & I love her :-) ) Uni is going well, and I'm making steps to become a paramedic. Just need to convince them that I am worthy enough to be on the course. My enthusiasm is indirectly proportional to my grades.
So, Thank you, so far, 2013. You've treated me better than 2012 ever did.
Peace Out

Greetings :-)
Ok, so this year has been a mixture of both good and bad. Lets start with the positive
Good
Bad
Good
- Met some fantastic new friends
- Lost roughly 4 stone in weight
- Took up new hobbies (Photography, more music, Martial arts, magic)
- Been to some weird and wonderful places
- Visited a zoo 3 times this year, each time I stroked a giraffe
Bad
- Still Single
- Sister was diagnosed with a benign tumour and had to have an op
- Dad broke his hip whilst on holiday which hasn't healed as well as they would like... Meaning another op.
- People whom I have developed a crush on seem to find interest in someone else, often quoting "you're a nice guy, any woman would be a fool not to be with you"
- Getting my arse kicked by Uni work (ok, it's 3rd year so it's expected)
- Lack of funds and can't find work (been applying and applying but to no avail)

*opens eyes and yawns* Morning
You know.....it really is quite remarkable the difference that can happen in a year.
Will try to make more of this blog from now on :-)

Hi all
been a while since I posted here.
Thought I would post this here rather than facebook, or twitter (even though I don't have one) etc. To be honest, I've been feeling a bit crap.
I'm fairly useless at writing down how I truly feel as I always seem to mess it up, and there is always someone who could write it a lot more eloquently than myself.
In this case it's Gotthard, a soft rock group which was fronted by a man named Steve Lee, who unfortunately was killed last year in a freak accident.
The song is "And then Goodbye" and it's basically mapped out the last 4 years of my life...But you know what, I don't regret a single moment of them. Except the ones where I was a true idiot.

Bad Science (sorry Mr Goldacre, couldn't think of anything else to call it)
Well, after a quick look on facebook it appears that I may have rattled the cage of someone who thinks that big pharmacutical companies are bad, and that all-natural is the panacea of illnesses. I won't point names and name fingers, but I will paste our conversation.
Him: Type up 'veganism and cancer' on Google, also 'Wheatgrass and cancer' on Google, they both basically prevent cancer if you've been diagnosed with it. There's also an Amazonian plant which can heal cancer, but the state like an unhealthy nation because we then become reliant on them, believing they are trying to help us find a cure, when all they're really doing is exploiting our loved ones illnesses for profit.
Me: know what, there are so many flaws with your points Stevie that it wouldn't even be fair to point them out. But not on here.
Him: Well as it seems from your profile you're 'pro-state' anyway. My points have also been proven on various accounts including a couple of which I've witnessed, one of which a guy had lung cancer and hair loss, and a few shots of wheatgrass a day over a course of time and his lungs repaired themselves and his hair grew back, you can't disprove something like that surely?
Yes It's been edited as it was on a relatives post. Also, yes, I will disprove it.
You see, Wheatgrass contains the following ingrediants... Grass. Ok, if you want to get technical, (thank you http://www.internethealthlibrary.com/Plant-Remedies/wheatgrass.htm )
1) "Wheatgrass works by filling nutritional gaps in the diet and cleansing the blood. It is high in vitamins A, C and E, containing the same amount of vitamin C as an orange. It is also an excellent source of essential B vitamins, which are necessary for normal brain and body development.
2)Wheatgrass juice also contains many essential minerals : calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, sodium, necessary for healthy bones, teeth, hair and skin.
3)Wheatgrass juice contains natural enzymes, which help the bodies defence mechanism by strengthening cells and removing poisons from the blood stream. It helps eliminate toxins accumulated from eating processed food, breathing polluted air and drinking impure water.
4)Wheatgrass also has dilating effect on the blood vessels allowing blood to flow more easily. This improved circulation means valuable nutrients can be distributed more efficiently throughout the body. It also has an effect on red blood cells, whereby it increases the iron content in the blood."
wow, it sounds very powerful. I will debunk this part one paragraph at a time. Starting from 1.
1)Any person who knows what a perfectly balanced diet is would NOT be having nutritional gaps. Also, it is unclear about how much wheatgrass contains the orange equivalent of Vit C, is it a little? is it a lot? is it a sugar-cubes worth? is it a metric-fuckload? who knows? Anyways, moving on, B vitamins. Having looked at wikipedia, the conditions which arise from all B vitamins is pretty darn scary. However, as pointed out, any person with a varied diet (heck, even processed food these days) will be ingesting B vitamins. So that's out the window.
2) wow, sounds pretty cool, again, see point 1 about a balanced diet.
3)ENZYMES DO NOT COCKING WELL DO THAT!!!! Granted they may be primarily used in digestion and cell mediation, but they do NOT clean the blood. That's up to the Spleen and the Kidneys. The blood passes through the spleen where white blood cells attack, ingest and then digest any foreign invader (organic or not!) whilst the kidneys filter out the liquids. Enzymes don't play a part in it!
4) The only thing I could find to support this was from http://www.livestrong.com/article/442161-what-are-the-benefits-of-wheat-grass-capsules/ where it says "Ingredients in wheat grass MAY!!! stimulate your body to produce small amounts of natural nitric oxide. Nitric oxide causes your blood vessels to dilate." (see how I highlighted may? they're unsure and are guessing.)
Oh, one more thing. For people to take vitamin supplements, they normally come in a huge pill. This is because it's an enteric coating designed to take a corrosive beating from the stomach, meaning that you won't get 100% of the dose, but it's a damn sight more than a normal sugar-coating. So when you ingest wheatgrass, all them lovely nutrients and vasodilators and yummy enzymes are destroyed in the stomach. Seriously, in the continuing battle between chemicals, acids come out close to the top (alkali is worse ;-) )
Right, that's that part debunked. Let's go on about the Lung Cancer and the Hair loss. Firstly, I know not the circumstances surrounding the hair loss (could be chemo, could be alocepia, could be trauma. I dunno) But wheatgrass won't cause hair follicles to grow back. Once the root is gone, that's it, the chances of hair growing back their naturally are quite slim. If it did cause hair to grow back, I know a lot of bald blokes who would be downing it like vodka. Secondly, It appears that all those smart pharmacutical companies, biochemists and medical degrees are a waste. I mean, Cancer has been around since the dawn of time (well, seeing as it is just rogue cells, it fits really)and survival rates have never been higher thanks to modern medicine and intervention. But these are all relatively new. Say roughly 20-30 years, yet Wheatgrass has been around for millenia and still Cancer was a death sentance back then. Granted that lower life expectancy meant you wouldn't reach old age to be the most prone to cancer, but if you did live longer then, you would see.
I also refer to the little addendum after point 4. Orally ingested enzymes are digested in the stomach and have no enzymatic activity in the eater.
TL;DR? Wheatgrass curing cancer and hair-loss? Please, that's along the same lines as Homeopathy!

Hmmm.
Well, it turns out I'm just a tad wrong in the head.
Best get it looked at really.
Don't worry, all psychological, nothing medical.
That is all.
Peace

Bah!
Hello all, It's been a while (a year come april) and a lot has happened and a lot has changed in that time so where to begin. Well, for a start, the family member in my last post has died (he was diagnosed in January and died on May 10th, the day before my first major exam (silver lining: he wasn't suffering for long and he was looked after by my parents throughout, plus everyone was there for him. From what I hear, the send-off was fitting. I didn't make it as the funeral was on the day I flew to Austria, he effectively banned me from turning up as he didn't want to ruin my holiday there.))
Me and my girlfriend have been to Kenya on a holiday, which was incredible. If you wanna look at pictures, then look at my flickr photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/52810304@N06 here :-p
I started my 2nd year at uni and have taken up modules which I've been looking forward to, especially Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology. All I ask is that you don't call me Bones because of it!
So why am I writing this up at 3am? Is it because I can't sleep? Well, yeah that has something to do with it, unless I sleep type. Is it because I have something on my mind? Yes, yes it is. Is it because I'm hungry? No.
The thing that's on my mind is Depression. Now, I wouldn't say I'm depressed as some people I know, but I do go through phases. The doctor suspects I have S.A.D although it hasn't been confirmed, mainly due to me not organising any follow up appointments, but hey-ho that's life. My moods are weird, right now I think I'm going through a down phase and just feel quite shit tbh, but I know that in a week or a couple of days it will pass and I will be cheery again.
People who know me keep asking what is wrong, and that's the worst part. I can't really tell them what's the matter with me, or why I'm pretty down as I just don't know.
And with that unloaded I feel like I should get to bed as I'm up again in 4 hours for about 10 hours of lecture. Happy days (starting with Evolution :-D)
as my dad would say... Keep Smiling

Just a thought
ok, here's me looking at the worst case scenario. But guess what's been on my mind lately, for some odd reason.
7 Defective Genes
1 rebellious cell not obeying the PCD function.
1 Cell's ironic quest for immortality
1 family mourning
It's unreal how something so small, so minute as a single chemical, which is either there or not, can cause so much pain, fear and anger in the world.

It's unreal how something so small, so minute as a single chemical, which is either there or not, can cause so much pain, fear and anger in the world.

Edduekayshunn
It's been almost 2 months since myself and fellow students could start re-applying for free monies, and it got me thinking. It's a question that has been on my mind for quite some time now, ever since the news was announced really, about the govenments view on higher education and the funding towards it. My question is simple so if you can answer it feel free, the question is thus:
What..........the HELL do the government think they are doing?
They have cut the budget by £449 million (or £51 million less than half a billion to give some context) and yet are still urging people to go to uni. This is going to have one hell of a knock on effect. The reason why I am ranting here is because the govenment (ok, I use that term too freely, it's not the whole government I'm angry at here, just the Higher Education Funding Council) have decided that they need to save money due to the economy. By saving money they can help rebuild the economy.
Bollocks I say!
By making more cuts it means that universities are going to have to cut the amount of places available to study, and even stop some of their courses altogether. On top of that universities will also put their fees up. Which is bad as most students struggle to live on their loans as it is (when you get books, equipment, rent etc.)
The repercussions of this decision to cut costs will spread out across a couple of generations. Less students means less skills being taught, which means less qualified people which means there are not enough doctors, nurses, scientists, teachers, business managers (both domestic and overseas) etc. I'm willing to bet that in the future the HEFC and possibly even Prime Minister Bruce Dickinon will be complaining saying there are not enough qualified people in this country doing important jobs and we should be encouraged to go to university and higher education.
If I want to be encouraged to do something I want to have the reassurance that what I'm going to do is going to be long term. Hell, I've already had a scare this year when I found out the course I'm doing was looked at as one of the courses the university might have wanted to cut. If they did, it would mean I've wasted 2 years here and got nothing to show for it. I Probably wouldn't have been able to transfer my grades and I would have to start from scratch.
I'm willing to make a bet of £5 that, in the future, the government (or the HEFC) blames the people for not embracing higher education and makes us feel ashamed.
Why only £5? I'm a student, it's all I can afford.

An open letter to a bad driver
This has been posted on facebook, but sod it, thought I might as well post it here as well.
Dear Cunty McCunterton III of Cuntsville, Virginia.
The only reason why I presume you live in Virginia is because of how you were driving along the M6 near towards Stoke-on-Trent, England, UK.
First of all, allow me to apologise for my lack of ability to phase-shift through solid objects. It would appear that, as I was in the fast lane overtaking 4 Lorries, with a crash barrier on the right hand side, I was merely dawdling. In fact I was within the speed limit, maybe a unit or 2 over but that is irrelevant to you. I was in your way, which is why you must have flashed your lights. To warn me to get out of the way.
But here's the thing, due to my lack of phase-shifting abilities I could not go anywhere, let alone take my car with me. If I had attempted to do that I would end up either 4 inches thick (which would do wonders to my weight loss plan) on one side or resembled something made by Damien Hirst due to a crash barrier on the other. This is why I stood my ground and sped up a tiny bit so you were not able to see which colour of underwear I was wearing (blue, in case you're interested. With a worrying brown streak after seeing how close you got, not matter, I class it as a 'go-faster stripe'"
Secondly, why did you flash me? If you knew me at all you would know I can be a stubborn person and when somebody tries to scare me off the road, then I piss them off. That is why after you had kept your distance I slowed down so I was going *just* faster than the Lorries. I did not see anyone else complain, It could have been the fact that the government had decided to give out free Xanax for everyone and they were happy. Or maybe it was due to the roadwork’s we were stuck in with 50MPH emblazoned everywhere and average speed cameras dotted bout the place! Either way, I was not moving, so flashing me was useless (and quite rude, IMHO.)
Thirdly, why on earth did you start following me? Was it because I lacked the ability to phase-shift and travel THROUGH solid metal moving at 45-50mph? Was it because you were REALLY curious about the colour of my underwear? or was it because you just wanted to apologise to me for being a cunt? I shall never know as I never stopped. I wanted to at a couple of service stations, but as soon as I indicated, so did you. This made me uneasy and so I kept on travelling. Of course, things got really silly when you thought you could out-smart me and UNDERTAKE the lorry in the middle lane. He was there for a reason and that reason was the little reliant robin tootling along. Oh how red your face was when you discovered that, though I'm not sure if it was humiliation or anger.
At this point Sir, I feel I must point out that you were driving a clapped out Volvo Hatchback (F or K reg, I'm not sure) and were not driving the latest Cock-rocket you thought you were. May I give you a few tips to help you through life.
Calm down, your blood pressure will thank you
Untie you tie and don't let it strangle you
Notice the traffic ahead, and take positive actions to avoid accidents
Time your journey, If you are going to be late and let people know
Slow Down - feel better knowing that you're less likely to kill.
An easy way to remember this acronym is realise it also describes a certain genre of people who earn a 'special' place in my heart. C.U.N.T.S.
You were not in a brand new BMW. You were not in the latest Audi. For god's sake man, you weren't even in a mercedes van! You were in a clapped out Volvo hatch-back which I'm nigh-on sure had it's spare tire on!!!
Stop it, just Stop it, you're being silly.
Yours Sincerely

Swine flu and media hype
It was only a matter of time before a blog like this came along.
Today I heard on the news that swine flu is yet again spreading, more people are getting sick, Tamiflu is being recommended and even being hailed as a cure for Swine Flu, so say the newsreaders and the Media.
I for one am a bit pissed off with this as Tamiflu is just the pharmacutical equivalent of Beechams. It is NOT a cure, all it does is lesson the effects of the swine-flu.
So, if you have a snotty nose, a sore throat and a bad cough, you will have to suffer that for about 5 days while the virus runs it's course (before your immune system will kick it's ass.) If you get given a course of Tamiflu you will have a not-so-snotty nose, a not-so-sore throat and an annoying cough for 4 days.
Oh, but I forgot to mention the side effects of it, or rather, the main one.
Nausea
Bad nausea at that
So, even though the effects of the symptoms are reduced and it can take up to a day off them. It will leave you feeling like throwing your guts up until you stop taking it (which is something like 2 weeks)
And as an extra note, my mam is a nurse, she has witnessed people PRETENDING to have swine flu, or at least pretending they have the effects, so they can give it to their kids saying "take this and you won't have swine flu"
I propose we introduce licences for breeding if this is the mentality of parents "take this symptom reducer and you will not get the disease"
ah, I feel I am deviating from the main point of this, which is MEDIA!!!! STOP FUCKING AROUND AND TELL THE TRUTH, TAMIFLU IS NOT A CURE!!!! AND IT MAKES YOU WANT TO VOMIT FOR THE DURATION YOU TAKE IT!!!!
I'd rather have the 5 day flu

chain letters and my response
Today on facebook, somebody posted a chain mail. Now, I haven't had one of those in a long time and I welcome it. In fact, I shall respond to it thusly:
To all Chain-Mail Senders
I'd like to thank all of you who have taken the time and trouble to send me your damn chain letters over the few years. Thank you for making me feel safe, secure, blessed, and wealthy.
Because of your concern...I no longer can drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains. I no longer drink Pepsi or Dr Pepper since the people who make these products are atheists who refuse to put "Under God" on their cans. I no longer drink anything out of a can because I will get sick from the rat feces and urine.I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer. I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could get pricked with a needle infected with AIDS. I no longer use cancer causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day.
I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me. I no longer receive packages from UPS or FedEx since they are actually Al Qaida in disguise. I no longer shop at Target since they are French and don't support our American troops.I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a stupid number for which I will get the phone bill from hell with calls to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore, and Uzbekistan.I no longer eat KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers.
I no longer date the opposite sex because they will take my kidneys and leave me taking a nap in a bathtub full of ice.I no longer have any sneakers -- but that will change once I receive my free replacement pair from Nike. I no longer buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus since I now have their recipe.
I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels looking out for me. I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl who is about to die in the hospital (for the 1,387,258th time).I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special e-mail program. Yes, I want to thank all of you soooooooo much for looking out for me!
I will now return the favor. If you don't send this e-mail to at least 1200 people in the next 60 seconds, a large bird with diarrhea will crap on your head at 5:00 PM this afternoon and the fleas of a thousand camels will infest your armpits. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a friend of a friend of a friend.
Yours Sincerely

Finally
After many days, weeks, months and years (ok, the last 2 are a lie) I have finally got a blogspot. Feel free to come back and visit, it'll be tales about uni life, life in general, random thoughts, QOTW and just about things in general.
Now, go on, do what you were doing before you saw this.
